98 Ford escourt?

We noticed today when we started the car that there was a rattle,(Not a lifter) and when my husband went to go down road it blue a mall puff of white smoke and the rattleing stoped, anyone have any idea on what it could be, would really appreciate it...Oh by the way we just had a ball joint replaced on the car by the way it has 149,000 miles on it
